American Eagle Fined by DOT for Tarmac Delays Jul 23rd 2013, 17:11
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has fined American Eagle Airlines $200,000 for tarmac delays in Dallas on Christmas Day, 2012, the department said on Tuesday.
Ten American Eagle flights had delays of over three hours at Dallas-Fort Worth airport during a snow and ice storm. The bulk of the delays—eight in total--occurred under exemptions to federal fines, according to the department.
The two fined incidents entailed passengers being held on flights on the tarmac on arriving and departing flights for over four hours. The DOT’s ruling, which took effect in August 2011, fines U.S. airlines in incidents where passengers are detained on flights on the tarmac for over three hours. American Eagle was the first airline to receive a tarmac delay fine of $900,000 for a delay that occurred at Chicago O’Hare in 2011.
Airline spokespeople said that passengers who were delayed over four hours were offered AAdvantage Miles or other travel vouchers.
