U.S. Senator Calls for National Safety Standards in Wake of Six Flags Texas Accident Jul 24th 2013, 18:05
A U.S. Senator wants to implement national safety standards for theme parks in the wake of last weekend’s roller coaster accident at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas, in which a woman fell to her death, according to the Associated Press. Senator Edward Markey (D-Mass.) cited the lack of federal regulations for the risk involved in riding the coasters.
Currently, theme park safety standards are the domain of individual states. Some states, like California, employ inspectors to periodically check the rides at theme parks in the state. While Texas does have safety standards for roller coasters and other rides, that state does not employ its own inspectors.
Markey said national safety standards should cover the ‘‘totality of the safety system’’ for theme park rides.
